Three newly acquired Yangtse-made electric buses at the DSWD Central Office, marks the rollout of the agency's PWD–Electric Transportation Service (PWD-ETS) Project under the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).
These eco-friendly vehicles made by Yangtse aim to revolutionize public transport for persons with disabilities, addressing long-standing accessibility challenges.
Fleet Details and Inclusive Design
The initial fleet of 20 e-buses features dedicated accessibility features, including ramps for wheelchairs, designated spaces for mobility devices, and CCTVs for passenger safety. Developed in collaboration with PWD members of SLP associations, the buses were designed with direct input from the community they serve. Miramel Laxa, Director of the DSWD Sustainable Livelihood Program, emphasized that PWDs were consulted throughout the design process to ensure the buses meet their specific needs.
Operational Plans and Community Impact
Currently operating as corporate shuttles in Taguig City, the e-buses will soon transition to public transportation, with Quezon City earmarked as the first route. A dedicated app will allow PWD riders to check routes, destinations, and boarding points, eliminating the need to wait outdoors. This initiative addresses a critical gap: many PWDs, like Gina Reyes from Quezon City's SLP, struggle to use traditional jeepneys due to steps and lack of assistance. "Jeeps have two steps, so you need someone to carry you," Reyes said. "The e-bus has a ramp, making it much easier for wheelchair users."
